One of the hot trends for spring/summer 2015 is the waist hugging obi belt. But this accessory is not one of recent begginings. An obi belt is a type of sash used for kimonos, a robe worn in traditional Japanese culture. They are typically made of a wide strip of fabric featuring extra long, thinner strips at either end. This portion is wrapped around the waist and then tied. Common materials used for obi belts are leather and cotton fabric. Modern day versions are similar in style and function to traditional belts, but tend to be slightly thinner.

Obi belts are worn around the waist, as oppose to the hips. This type of belt is made to accentuate the waist and bring out natural curves. Therefore, obi belts work best with clothing such as tunics, dresses, and long cardigans. They also look great with high waist pants or jeans, creating a casual yet sophisticated look.

At the runway, we saw a twist on the ancient design. Many of the designers chose to make it fresh by leaving the wide strip behind and using only the thin wrap that goes around the traditional belt. 3.1 Phillip Lim opted for a cord-like belt in leather. Other brands like Alexander Wang and Tome use a strong fabric to compliment the clothing pieces. Edum embellished the belt with a simple and big metal ring where the belt is knotted.

How to wear the obi? Over everything! The obi belt completes a look with elegance, pulling together separates and adding a brilliant twist to maxi dresses and tailored jumpsuits.
