I AM BEAUTIFUL MOVEMENT / MOVIMIENTO YO SOY HERMOSA

Lately I have seen on social media different viral videos about personal image and self-esteem. From good to worse, many images had invaded my mind and made me think about it over and over again. I had to do something about it and that is why I decided to write this post.

The first video made me have mixed feelings.  The video was part of a campaign that has been devised for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities by Pro Infirmis, an organisation for the disabled. Entitled “Because who is perfect? Get closer.”, it is designed to provoke reflection on the acceptance of people with disabilities. At first I thought that the video was a great way to communicate to the world how people with disabilities feel and let then know that there is an acceptance problem in society regarding their physical appearance.

But then it hit me: is great what I am thinking… it a good and positive thought born from love to other, but in some sort of way I can relate to them. I am petite and overweight (based on my ideal BMI number),  and there is no mannequin in any store that looks like me. In reality, I buy stuff based on an  ideal that I will never achieve or want to achieve. And I asked myself: why is there so much pressure to look certain way to BE “ACCEPTED” or feel better about ourselves? why can’t we just accept who we are and built upon that?

The second video hit me harder. It moved everything inside me and made me thing some more. Why do I have on the back of my mind: what do people think about me? How do people see me? And most important: how do I see myself? As I saw the video I tried to imagine how would I had reacted if I was the person in the video, what the other might have said about me… and just stopped there. Hearing my own words describing me were just too critical.

¿Cómo me ven?

The third video made me angry. Why do people and specially woman let a man decide what is the beauty standard in a country? Why do they let him say insults and mean things to them? And specially, why sometimes we can agree with him? The sad part is that everywhere around the globe that problem exists. We either follow the crowd or go against it. I decided to create for myself and everyone who wants to join it: THE I AM BEAUTIFUL MOVEMENT.

The last video is my favorite one. It tells everything that I know is true and right for me. It is inside me but I just need the courage to remember it AT ALL TIMES. Not sometimes, but ALL THE TIME.

And it doesn’t mean I am perfect, or that I am not going to change my appearance. I will lose weight, not because I want to look like a model, just because I am getting sick for the pounds gain. I will take care of my hair, nails and face, not because there is something wrong with it, but because I want to look the best way possible FOR MYSELF. I will still love fashion and shopping, but I WILL DO IT BASED ON MY BODY, understanding that one size does not fit all. And most importantly, I WILL ENCOURAGE OTHER WOMEN to love themselves as they should.

This is the I AM BEAUTIFUL MOVEMENT.

No a veces, SINO TODO EL TIEMPO.
